Cooper Home, Lesson #3, Masks, 10/31/22

I think that this was a very successful lesson. Every student made at least one mask and many students made several. They were working until the end of the time period and some didn't want to stop working at the end when they had to clean up! Students were putting on their masks and walking around showing me and the other teachers as well as their peers. I think we did great in our preparation by having several examples as well as a brief art history lesson on the origin of masks and their many different uses.

One thing we could have done to make class go smoother would be to have a demonstration on a few ways they could go about turning the paper plate option into a mask that they could wear. Many people who chose the paper plate mask option had trouble getting the mask to become wearable. There isn't much that I would change about this lesson, it went really well and everybody seemed to have a great time and they all really showed their creativity,

I also think that putting out several materials is a great way to keep engagement. For this lesson, they had paper plates, surgical masks, pipe cleaners, yarn , paint, markers, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, and glue. I think that the talk we had before the start of the project was really important and I would definitely do that if I taught this lesson again. We talked about the history and use of masks as well as ideas of what they could make. Having students talk about their ideas out loud may inspire others and help spark creativity.
