Parker Browne's Art
Quality Standard #1
Teachers demonstrate mastery of and pedagogical expertise in the content they teach.
I feel I am proficient with this standard. Through my student teaching I have engaged students with literacy and mathematics during their art education in several different forms and lessons. I believe an important part of art is being able to reflect on your work and students write self reflections and or artist statements for almost every project they create .I showed my expertise by creating examples for the projects and creating lessons.

Element a: Teachers provide instruction that is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards, their District’s organized plan of instruction, and the individual needs of their students.
The Colorado art education standards are very broad and more than one standard often apply to my lessons. Through my student teaching students worked with all of the standards. They practiced to invent and discover to create, envision and critique to reflect, observe and learn to comprehend, and relate to connect and transfer. I also connected the standard to different studio habits of mind that applied to the lesson. I think that reflecting on their artwork is so important and a standard I try to incorporate in every lesson.

Element b: Teachers develop and implement lessons that connect to a variety of content areas/disciplines and emphasize literacy and mathematical practices
I did my best to incorporate literacy and mathematics in my art lessons. At the highschool level, the Art Appreciation class for Front Range Community College did an in progress class critique on a project where they drew forms going to a vanishing point. I involved the students in visual, oral, and, written literacy in this lesson by having them critique a peers art by giving two compliments and one constructive criticism. The students also talked briefly about their own artwork. At the end of the critique, the students wrote a small reflection about the feedback they got in critique and if/why they were going to make changes to their piece based on that feedback. Math has been incorporated in a few lessons like using rulers but my favorite way that I connected math into my art lessons was teaching about the art element form. Students learned the difference between flat shapes and 3D forms. They made their own form of a cake by using cardboard and masking tape. We talked about how form take up space and have volume. I showed students pictures of different forms and foam models of forms that my mentor teacher has in her classroom.

Element c: Teachers demonstrate knowledge of the content, central concepts, inquiry, appropriate evidence-based instructional practices, and specialized characteristics of the disciplines being taught.
I demonstrated my knowledge of content by designing lessons, making examples, and providing one and one assistance. Pottery was my specialty at CSU and I helped teach Pottery and Advanced Pottery at Timnath Middle High School. I was able to teach students how to use the pottery wheel in small groups. This was many of the students first time using the pottery wheel. I shared my personal experiences and tips about using the wheel and encouraged them to try new things. The pottery wheel can be very frustrating so we laughed off lots of mistakes and a few students were interested in trying again. I was impressed by how willing they were to try something completely new and their persistence to keep going.
